God's Mysterious Dealings

If God were dealing with us as sinners, that is, if He were dealing with us because of certain personal sins and personal faults, we could quite clearly understand that; but when He is dealing with us in relation to Divine purpose, as His servants, His dealings with us go far beyond our understanding. We are taken out into a realm where we do not understand what the Lord is doing with us, and why the Lord takes certain courses with us. We are out of our depth; we are altogether baffled; and we are compelled - that is, if we are going on with God - to believe that God knows what He is doing: we have just to move with Him according to whatever light we may have, and believe that these dealings with us, so far beyond our understanding are somehow related to that purpose with which we are called, and that the explanation waits some distance ahead, and we will find it when we get there. God does not explain Himself when He takes a step with us.

People of the Divine Purpose

How often the Lord has had to say regarding His purpose, "I meant it to be with this people in this place, and I made a beginning which was in much life, but I am being limited by them, they want an easier way. I cannot go beyond the measure they give Me, so I must move on and carry it further with others and elsewhere." The Book of the Revelation is the summation and the consummation of these Divine reactions and it sees victory and realization at last, with every faithful remnant present..
This means that, although at many times and with many means it looks as though God was defeated and frustrated by the imposed limitations of those concerned, He has never abandoned His purpose, but is going on ...

Somehow, somewhere, sometime, a truly committed people will know that God reserved the purpose unto them and that it was in His hands despite all the appearances to the contrary.

Without the Spirit

When the Spirit of God is gone, even truth itself becomes an iceberg. How wretched is religion when it becomes frozen and lifeless! The Holy Spirit is gone, and all energy and enthusiasm have gone with Him.

What the valleys would be without their brooks, or the cities without their wells; what the corn fields would be without the sun - that would our churches be without the Holy Spirit. As well think of day with light, or life without breath, or heaven without God, as of Christian service without the Holy Spirit.

Nothing can supply His place if He is absent: the pastures are a desert, the fruitful fields are a wilderness, Sharon languishes, and Carmel is burned with fire.

Blessed Spirit of the Lord, forgive us that we have done such despite to you, by our forgetfulness of you, by our proud self-sufficiency, by resisting your influences, and quenching your fire! Henceforth work in us according to your own excellence. Make our hearts tenderly impressible, and then turn us as wax to the seal, and stamp upon us the image of the Son of God.

~Charles Hadden Spurgeon~

Heavenly Wisdom

"The Comforter, the Holy Spirit ... will teach you all things" (John 14:26).

There is a heavenly wisdom which the Holy and Blessed Spirit alone can give. He sheds a sacred light on His own word of truth, and by His personal and living teachings - opens, enlarges, and persuades the heart to receive what He thus shows and teaches.

However valuable and blessed the book of God is, we cannot be made wise unto salvation by the word itself without the special teachings of the Holy Spirit as a personal and living instructor. He can suit His teachings to our case; knows when, where, and how to teach us; can bear with our ignorance and stupidity; give us the right lesson at the right time and in the right way; and do for us what no earthly teacher can - write His own laws upon our hearts and give us will and power to keep and obey them.

"I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, and directs you in the way you should go." (Isaiah 48:17).

~J. C. Philpot~

"I want the presence of God Himself, or I don't want anything at all to do with religion. I want all that God has or I don't want any."

~A. W. Tozer~
